Lecture "Genetically enhanced plants - a chance to feed mankind and not an unnecessary interference in food production" presented by Prof. Dr Ewa Łojkowska, Interuniversity Faculty of Biotechnology UG and GUMed
Abstract: Plant breeding is as long as the history of mankind. However, over the centuries, and especially in the last 50 years, plant breeding methods have changed dramatically. Selection and reproduction of the best individuals and breeding of intra- and interspecific hybrids have been replaced by targeted breeding based on molecular markers, genetic modifications and genome editing.
In this talk, I will try to demonstrate that modern plant breeding based on genetic engineering in the broadest sense of the term is not a whim of scientists, but a necessity that will allow us to feed mankind with healthy food and reduce environmental pollution from chemical plant protection products.
