Renewable energy
Forms and semester of classes: Lecture 30 hrs, Laboratory Exercises 30 hrs, 2nd semester (summer)

Program contents:

Issues of the lecture: Characteristics of renewable energy sources. Determinants of energy policy in the XXI century. - Forecasts for the future. Discussion of methods of obtaining solar, wind, geothermal, tidal energy. Heat pumps. Photovoltaic cells. Solar collectors. Windmills. Biomass energy resources. Energy crops - raw material for the production of energy, liquid and gaseous biofuels. Characteristics and technologies of production of gaseous biofuels. and liquid biofuels. Disposal and management of waste generated during biofuel production. Hydrogen as a fuel of the future.

Issues of laboratory exercises basics of laboratory work, performance of exercises thematically related to the acquisition of energy from renewable sources (technological and qualitative aspects).

 

Waste management in enterprises
Forms and semester of classes: Lecture 15 hrs, Laboratory Exercises 15 hrs,  2nd semester (summer). 

Program contents:

Issues of lectures: Legal acts on national and European Union law in waste management. Definitions related to waste, waste disposal, waste producer and waste holder. Types of waste, waste catalog. Hazardous waste. Municipal sewage sludge. Prevention of waste generation, storage, recycling, transportation, collection of waste. Principles of waste business. Entrepreneur in waste management. Regulations, approvals, permits, reports, record-keeping. Documentation related to the turnover of waste. Policies and regulations on cross-border waste turnover. Vehicles as waste and their processing. Fees related to waste turnover. Investment and acquisition of funds for waste management. Criminal penalties for violations related to waste management.

Issues of laboratories: recycling, thermal disposal of waste, measurement of concentration of gaseous pollutants produced during waste incineration, energy potential of waste, biodegradation of waste, study visit to a waste treatment plant.

 

Nanotechnology and the environment

Water and sewage management in enterprises
Forms and semester of classes: Lecture 15 hrs, Laboratory Exercises 15 hrs,  1 semester (winter)

Program contents:

Issues of the lecture: Definitions and basic concepts of water and wastewater management; Principles of water management. Intake of surface and underground water for industrial purposes. Protection of water from pollution. Introduction of industrial wastewater, rainwater into waters, land or external sewage facilities. Requirements for the introduction of wastewater, rainwater into waters, land or external sewage facilities. Contracts for water supply and sewage collection by water and sewage companies. Legal requirements. Water and sewage management at the stage of project design and implementation. Reports on the impact of investments on the environment in terms of water and sewage management. Water permits for water intake and sewage disposal. Procedures of proceedings. Problems of the laboratory: Examples of technological processes used in environmental engineering. Execution of exercises simulating the course of selected processes used for wastewater treatment.

Design of ecological business
Forms and semester of classes: lecture 15 h, auditory exercises 15 h, II semester (summer)

Program contents:

Methods of ecological business design, the structure of the project, its components, interdependencies. Design combining economic and business elements with ecological technology as a result of which the student will acquire practical skills to prepare complete projects of new business ventures. The subject will be conducted through lectures enriched with numerous examples, calculations, models and case studies, as well as through exercises in which the student will be able to build the structure of his business-technology project.

Prototyping and elements of technology design
Forms and semester of the course: auditory exercises 15 h, laboratory exercises 30 h,  3rd semester (winter)

Program contents:

Intellectual property issues. Methods of writing a patent application, including patent claims. The idea of design thinking. Ways of presenting one's ideas (the so-called "elevator surprise" or elevator pitch). Elements of technology design.

 

Advanced technologies of environmental remediation

Forms and semester of classes: Lecture 23 hours, Laboratory Exercises 23 hours, 2nd semester (summer)

Program contents:

Issues of the lecture: Classification and sources of soil, water and air pollution. Classification of technologies used for soil remediation, water and wastewater treatment and air purification. Modern oxidation processes used in environmental remediation. Radiation technologies used for water and wastewater treatment and sludge hygienization. Selected technologies of soil remediation applied in-situ and ex-situ conditions. Selected technologies of air purification. Selected technologies for the elimination of oil spills. Advanced technologies of municipal and hazardous waste management. Technologies for treatment of leachate from landfills.

Issues of laboratory exercises: performance of exercises thematically related to the treatment of soils, wastewater, leachate and air (technological and qualitative aspects).

Green technologies
Forms and semester of classes: Lecture 30 hours, Auditorium Exercises 30 hours, 1 semester (winter)

Program contents:

Issues of the lecture: Philosophy of green chemistry and principles of green technology. The concept of sustainable development. Green technologies in organic synthesis. New reactions. Advanced oxidation processes. Catalysis. Alternative reactants and reaction media. Supercritical fluids. Ionic and fluorinated liquids. Reactions proceeding without solvents. New ways of conducting reactions. Electrochemical reactions - use of new electrode materials. Fuel cells. Photochemical reactions. Syntheses assisted by microwave radiation. Reactions assisted by acoustic waves. Examples of eco-investments in the chemical and food industries, technologies for industrial, hazardous waste management and carbon storage.

Master's seminar
Forms and semester of classes: seminar 15 h in semester II (summer), in semester III (winter) and in semester IV (summer).
